Why don't people get more self-reliant?

When people ask me about becoming more self-reliant they usually say.. " I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START?" A lot of them will focus on the total at the end of their year supply instead of breaking it down. Start with a one month supply, work to a 3 month and then to a 6 month. My hubby and I have been working on ours for over 5 years and still working on it. It takes time, and most importantly a change in habit. Most LDS families want too, they know the benefits, they know the peace that comes with becoming more self-reliant but they just don't know where to start?

*Start with adding things you already eat... canned goods, pasta's, cleaning products, bathroom products.. the things you normally buy when grocery shopping. Add 25.00 to you grocery budget just for food storage only.. and each shopping trip start adding.. if you can add more than the 25 then GREAT!

* Educate yourself about the things you are storing.. if you eat more rice than bread.. then store more rice.. look at the total in lbs at the bottom of the calculator. (You can find the link to the Ark You Ready calculator on my home page.)

* Remember if it expires within a year it is (short term food storage.) For example: Canned peaches, pears, peas, green beans, boxed cake, muffin, pancake, and brownie mixes.

* Long term food storage is (dry pack) products you pick up at the dry pack cannery. Things that last between 20 and 30 years.. that means you only have to rotate it once in a 20 or 30 year period. For example: Rice, wheat, spaghetti noodles, macaroni noodles, flour, sugar ect.
